Sailing & Racing - 2023/24 Season

GAC Sailing runs a relaxed racing program on Sunday afternoons in two seasons, nominally from October to March (Summer Season), and May to July (Winter Season), when visiting sailors of all ages are most welcome join us.

Families and friends can easily race together or against each other, as all craft are on the water at the same time. However, different courses may be set depending on age and ability. We have sailing members aged from 7 to 80.

All types of dinghies are welcome within standard yardstick ratings of 95+. We also cater for selected small catamarans of yardstick 100+. The club currently has strong fleets of Lasers (ILCA), Sabres and Optimists alongside other dinghies which have included OK Dinghies, Tasars, NS14s, Mirrors, Finns, and Cadets. Additionally, in recent seasons we've been please to welcome Windsurfer class sailboards!

On non-championship rounds (see program for dates), members enjoy different racing challenges including racing around the marinas, through the bridge and stern chasers. Race types depend on the weather and the creativity of the Race Officer that day!

Racing starts at 1pm. Race nominations can be made in the clubhouse from around 11.30am, and must be submitted by 12:30pm. Race briefing for 2022/23 season is 12:15pm.

Sausage sizzle, drinks and results presentation take place at the club after racing, usually around 3.30pm, with the bar open following sailing. Given the ongoing COVID-19 situation, we try to utilise the lawns outside the club. To access last-minute changes to schedule (inclement weather, COVID-19 etc), like or follow the GAC Sailing Facebook page.

To join in with our sailing events you will need to be a member of GAC Sailing or another sailing club, and be able to sail without instructor support. We have a small number of Pacers and Optimists for hire by GAC Sailing members for participation at our events. Please contact us in advance if you are considering this option. We also have opportunities to try sailing and to learn to sail throughout the year.

Visiting sailors and crew must be a full, sailing member of another sailing club, and should bring their Australian Sailing number to the nominations table. Visitors can race up to three dates in a sailing year. Please note that our committee are usually getting ready for sailing themselves from 11am, so if you are thinking of joining us for the first time do let us know in advance so we can be prepared to help you when you arrive. If you have any queries, please email us on GAC.Sailing@gmail.com
